We had a fantastic visit from Martin Lambie-Nairn on the 30th of January which proved to be our biggest Chitter Chatter yet! Just in case you missed it, here’s a run down of the hour.
He began by talking with us about his personal experience working for the BBC and the development of their brand identity. From having 180 different logos spanning across the entire BBC brand to the design of a unified identity system, which still allowed for the personal identity of each channel to shine through (such as the hot air balloon for BBC1), Martin revealed the intricacies of this process and how a designer can use ‘less to create more’.
It was really inspiring to see and hear how he worked through the process and demonstrated how teams of designers and strategists work together to achieve an impactful outcome. This resulted in the creation of a logo system that was simple but that ‘represented the energy of the property’.
Martin also held a Q&A session featuring members from our third year. He took questions from around the room to discuss a variety of topics including tips for client work and pressure, why he chose design, the benefits of tactile media, and different creative processes. He emphasised that having a generous and positive attitude can really make a difference in the industry and that, as designers, we all have a responsibility to close the gap between the vision of the creative and the client.
